Coby, a Ghanaian now living in the United States, shared his journey on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami. According to him, his dream of living abroad began years ago, starting with a move to the UK in 2014 through marriage. Though the marriage collapsed, it gave him his first opportunity to travel. After spending time in the UK and Ghana over several years, he finally relocated to the U.S. about a year ago and now lives in Mason, Cincinnati.
Before moving abroad, Coby was based in Madina, where he sold gadgets, clothing, and cars for friends, earning commissions. Despite hardships, including giving his last savings to help friends travel—only to be betrayed—and losing access to his child in the UK, he never gave up. He sent money regularly and tried to stay involved, though he hasn’t seen his child in over five years.
In America, Coby came in on a B1-B2 visa and began working immediately, determined not to overstay illegally. He picked up a job as an operator and was certified after just an hour of training. Coby now lives with his Black American wife and children and speaks highly of her support, despite the stigma he initially felt from past experiences with relationships. He admits he was scared of trusting again but was honest with his new partner from the start—telling her about his child in Ghana and his past.
His wife, a massage therapist, has offered to train him to work alongside her. She also supports his dream of investing in property back home and even wants to help him bring his child from Ghana to the U.S. According to Coby, America offers many opportunities if one is honest, disciplined, and realistic. He advises others not to chase flashy lifestyles but to live within their means and focus on learning a skill, as jobs like barbering or mechanics can pay well—even $30 for a single haircut.
