Josephine, a female truck driver based in Georgia, shared her story on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide with DJ Nyaami. She explained that although she was born in the U.S., her parents moved back to Ghana when she was young. After their marriage ended, her mother returned to the U.S., while her father remained in Ghana running a successful business. Josephine stayed in Ghana for a while, attending Achimota Preparatory and later secondary school in Dwabena before moving back to the U.S.

She had a boyfriend in Ghana, and after relocating to the U.S., he later joined her. They initially settled in New York, then moved to Chicago where they started a family. Josephine handled most of the paperwork and responsibilities because he didn’t have proper documentation. Eventually, they moved to Georgia, where she found the environment more comfortable. Passionate about business, they started a fish market together, but relationship issues arose. Coming from a background where her father had multiple wives, she was determined to have all her children with one partner. When the relationship deteriorated, they closed the business.

Left with three young children, Josephine needed a stable and flexible source of income. After trying different jobs, she discovered the trucking industry. She initially failed her first CDL test but passed on her second attempt. Now with six years of experience, she has traveled to 25 states. She admits trucking is a demanding job that requires careful planning, especially when it comes to buying quality equipment.

Typically, she spends three weeks on the road and then three days at home. She emphasized the sacrifices involved—spending an extra day at home means losing potential income. While the money was better in the past, she notes that owning your own truck comes with challenges. Despite setbacks, including being left alone with her children by her husband, she managed to rebuild her life. She stresses that being in a toxic relationship makes it almost impossible to thrive in trucking. She’s also had unique experiences, including one instance where a sex worker knocked on her truck and was shocked to find a woman inside.
