Meet Maabena Adooma: Ghanaian Woman in Middlesbrough Shares Her Journey on SVTV Africa

Maabena Adooma, a Ghanaian currently based in Middlesbrough in the United Kingdom, has shared her inspiring journey with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show. She left Ghana in September and granted us an exclusive interview about her life, education, and decision to relocate.

Maabena grew up between Kumasi and Ashtown. She attended Kumasi Academy, continued to Accra Polytechnic, and later completed her degree at Central University where she studied Accounting. She revealed that although she initially wanted to be a lawyer, her grandmother encouraged her to pursue a banking-related career because seeing bank tellers made her happy.

She completed her national service at Atebubu District Assembly and later worked with ECG and the National Theatre while still schooling. After graduation, Access Bank hired her at their Kantamanto branch. From there, she moved to the NGO sector and later worked with another company in Dansoman. During this time, she was also running a side hustle—selling items on WhatsApp and social media—to support herself due to low salaries.

Finally Back To Ghana – After 7 Months No Pay, 8 Months In Prison, 11 Months In Refugees Camp

Relocating abroad had always been part of her long-term plan. Her father once lived overseas, and although his attempt to help her travel did not work out, she kept trying. Maabena attempted Europe, the USA, and even Canada, but none worked. Eventually, she tried the UK pathway, and that was the breakthrough. Before relocating, she sold her car and belongings and resigned from her job. She applied to a UK school and paid her fees before finally moving.

Regarding relationships, Maabena revealed that she had a boyfriend in Ghana, but things were not working. Since arriving in the UK, she has had several approaches from men, but she says she hasn’t found what she wants yet. She prefers a man who is already living in the UK because she does not like long-distance relationships.

“Single life abroad is not easy,” she admitted. “I want an understanding man. My course here is a two-year program, and I’m focusing on building myself.”

Maabena’s story reflects resilience, preparation, and intentional planning—qualities that shaped her relocation journey and continue to guide her life abroad.
