UK-based Ghanaian Shadrack Boateng has shared his experience as a soldier in the Ghana Army and why he left for the UK.

Speaking on SVTV AFRICA with DJ Nyaami, Mr Boateng indicated that he had always wished to join the US Army but began his dream as a soldier in Ghana. After seven years in the army, he applied to study in the UK and resigned from his post.

“My father was also in the army, and he advised me to resign and leave for the UK. Six months after I came to the UK, I applied to join the UK army. It was a smooth process. My dream was to join the army in a different country because of the  Hollywood movies I saw. The Ghana army was just for the experience,” he said.

Moreover, Shadrack mentioned that he has not regretted joining the UK Army. He expressed pride in his job and added that the salary is also good.

“The training is tough. Before I joined, I thought the training would be much easier than in Ghana. It was the opposite. The process is free and smooth. All you need is a scholarship here in the UK.”

According to Shadrack, the Ghanaian government has “made us realise that even education will not help you in Ghana. There are many graduates in Ghana, but the certificate is of no benefit to them because there are no jobs. That’s why the youths are leaving. Why should I pay to serve my country,” he quizzed.
