Akua Bibi is a Ghanaian entrepreneur based in the Netherlands (Midlands) and the owner of African grocery and cosmetics businesses both abroad and in Ghana. She shared her experience in an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Business Link.
Akua Bibi disclosed that she recently spent nine months in Ghana during her initial visit and has now stayed for over a year since establishing her business locally. She moved abroad at the age of 17, first living in Germany for three years before relocating to the Netherlands, where she spent nearly 30 years working, growing, and building her life.
Although she is currently in Ghana, her business in the Netherlands continues to operate successfully under the management of her eldest son. She still supplies goods from Ghana to support the business abroad.
Her ventures focus on African food items, groceries, cosmetics, and wigs, which are sold on a large scale. She noted that a significant number of her customers in the Netherlands are Europeans.
According to Akua Bibi, there is money and opportunity in Ghana, but mindset remains a major challenge. She believes many people wrongly assume there are no jobs or business prospects in the country. She emphasized that flexibility, discipline, and a change in attitude are key to succeeding in Ghana.
She also highlighted challenges with workers, explaining that some employees expect quick wealth without patience or commitment. Akua Bibi stressed the importance of supervision and accountability in business, noting that some workers quit simply because of strict monitoring measures like security cameras.
Her story serves as a reminder that Ghana has opportunities, and with the right mindset and work ethic, success is achievable both at home and abroad.
