Agya Kwabena Raises Concerns Over Misuse of Ghanaian Passports in Europe
Agya Kwabena is a Ghanaian based in Italy. He appeared on SVTV Africa’s “Matter Dey” show, where he shared concerns about the misuse of Ghanaian passports in Europe.
According to Agya Kwabena, he has personally encountered several Nigerians using Ghanaian passports while living and traveling abroad. He recounted an experience in Amsterdam, where he met some individuals during a holiday. While speaking Twi, one of the men responded fluently and claimed he was from Kumasi. However, Agya Kwabena said that although the man later showed a Ghanaian passport, he admitted he was actually Nigerian.
He shared another recent encounter in Italy, where he met a man at a bus station who claimed to be Ghanaian and showed a Ghanaian passport. The man said he had traveled from France to Italy to visit a friend. When Agya Kwabena asked further questions about his hometown in Ghana, the man mentioned Accra, but later admitted he was Nigerian.
Agya Kwabena said these situations are becoming common and believes it is time for stricter measures to be put in place. He noted that the cost of living and rent in Europe are already high, and when individuals misuse Ghanaian documents and default on rent or engage in misconduct, it damages Ghana’s image abroad.
He further alleged that some Nigerians obtain Ghanaian passports within Europe. According to him, this growing problem has forced embassies to tighten security, including banning photography within embassy premises.
Agya Kwabena concluded by warning that when non-Ghanaians misuse Ghanaian passports to rent apartments or conduct official business and later cause problems, it negatively affects genuine Ghanaians living abroad. He called on authorities to strengthen passport controls to protect Ghana’s reputation internationally.
