Stephen is a Ghanaian based in Russia who recently appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide with DJ Nyaami.
He revealed that he arrived in Russia three months ago, in September, and ended up joining the Russian army, which has now left him amputated with one arm.
According to Stephen, he believed that when Donald Trump became president, he would help resolve the ongoing conflict, so he felt joining the Russian army would offer opportunities. However, things turned out very differently.
He explained that he was trained for just one month and one week, after which he was deployed to Vovchansk, a city Russia wanted to capture. He was supposed to be added to an already established defense team, but instead, he was sent straight to the frontline.
Stephen described the horrifying moment his arm was blown off:
They were given coordinates to attack the enemy. While in the military bus, the commanders warned them that their drone battery was low so they should hide. As he attempted to hide in the bush, a bomb exploded near him, instantly cutting off his arm.
He saw his arm on the ground.
A fellow soldier helped tie his arm tightly, and they ran into a nearby house. They found medical supplies inside, bandaged him, injected him, and carried him away from the battlefield toward a safer zone.
Stephen said he spent three days suffering without proper water or food, and they seized his phone. At night, when drones were not around, he crawled to the area where his people were. The medics injected him, treated him, and a Russian soldier deliberately injured himself to accompany Stephen back to safety.
He spent 13 days moving through dangerous areas, crossing water at dawn, sleeping under shields, until he finally reached a safe zone. The soldier who helped him carried him on his neck for nearly an hour.
When they finally reached medical help, doctors cleaned his wounds, cut what was left of the arm, and transferred him to a hospital in Moscow.
“My Entire Squad Is Dead”
Stephen emotionally shared that all the men in his squad — including Ghanaians, Kenyans, and other Africans — are dead.
Many of them left behind wives and children, but their families have no idea what happened to them, because no one has their contacts.
Stephen revealed that many Africans were tricked into joining the army.
Agents tell them they are coming to Russia to work with a security company.
When they arrive at the airport, they are picked up by soldiers, only to realize later that they have been drafted into the military, not security work.
He said many do not even know they are signing military contracts.
A Ghanaian man paid GHS 100,000 to an agent who ended up placing him in the army. Another friend, Fred, spent $7,000 on the same process — only to be forced into the battlefield.
Stephen was paid $10,000, which he has already sent to his account in Ghana.
He lost both parents years ago, so he shared the news with his pastor brother, who was happy at first but is now heartbroken seeing Stephen’s condition.
Stephen said he is grateful to be alive, because every member of his squad is dead, and yet more Africans — especially Kenyans — continue to join without knowing the truth.
