Dr. Emmanuel Kwaku: From Nurse to Doctor, Choosing to Serve Ghana Over Abroad

In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide, Dr. Emmanuel Kwaku shared his remarkable journey in the medical field and why he chose to remain in Ghana despite opportunities abroad.

Dr. Kwaku began his career as a student nurse before training in anesthesia at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He later worked in various hospitals, including Korle-Bu, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, and Ridge Hospital in Accra. His passion for medicine pushed him beyond nursing—he studied in Ukraine in 2013, eventually earning his medical doctor’s license after already holding both a nursing license and an anesthesia license in Ghana. “I always desired to be a medical doctor. I wanted to be a vessel to help my fellow man,” he said.

Growing up in a small town, he recalled the unity and strong sense of community. “In my village, no one slept outside. We all cared for one another. That sense of unity inspired me,” he explained. He also led as a football captain in his youth, which taught him leadership and teamwork—qualities he carried into his medical career.

Although he had the chance to remain abroad after his studies, Dr. Kwaku returned home. He emphasized that true development comes from people, not just resources. “It’s not gold or cocoa that makes a country great—it’s the people. Abroad, they use their resources wisely to make their countries better. We must do the same in Ghana,” he stressed.

He believes many Ghanaians abroad criticize the country’s health system but do not return to help improve it. “Instead of complaining, let’s come together and fix it. I had offers abroad, even in neurosurgery, but I chose to come back and serve at home,” he said.
