Ohemaa Betty, a Ghanaian living in the UK, shared valuable advice on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami.
She emphasized the importance of mothers guiding their children from a young age. According to her, if children are advised early, they are more likely to accept guidance as adults.
Reflecting on advice from her own mother, she shared: “My mom once told me that if I meet a man who takes good care of his children, I should stay quiet, focus on myself, and work hard.”
She criticized the trend of some women prioritizing looks over substance in relationships, stressing that inner peace is far more important. “Some people may look good but have terrible character,” she noted, adding that many marriages end in divorce within the first year because of misplaced priorities.
Ohemaa encouraged women to be independent and avoid relying solely on men. She once advised a young woman who was focused on finding a handsome man to instead seek a good man with strong values.
She also addressed cultural mindsets that Africans often carry abroad, which she believes are unhelpful. She criticized the societal pressure in Ghana around marriage and childbirth, stating: “Marriage is not sold in supermarkets or shops. It’s wrong to take out a loan just to have a wedding.”
To her, marriage is like building a house—it doesn’t increase in financial value immediately, so spending excessively is unwise. She advised women not to encourage men to take loans to marry them, saying, “If your partner insists on taking a loan for the wedding and you agree, you’re setting yourselves up for financial hardship.”
Ohemaa also spoke about emotional resilience in relationships. She advised women to let go if a man chooses someone else, explaining that “You can’t love two people equally. Even parents sometimes have a favorite child, though I personally don’t.”
She acknowledged that some children may be stubborn, but every parent hopes for the best, even when it’s difficult.
