Sammy, a Ghanaian who once spent six years teaching back home, has now transitioned into a dual career in teaching and healthcare in the United Kingdom. In a revealing interview on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami, he shared the ups and downs of his migration story.

“If I had discovered SVTV Africa earlier,” Sammy admits, “I would have acted faster and made more informed decisions.”

His early days in the UK were tough. He applied for over 200 jobs before finally landing roles in both education and healthcare.

“I added a short healthcare course to boost my CV—that move changed everything,” he explained.

From pulpit teaching in Ghana to professional training sessions in the UK, Sammy’s journey is marked by resilience.

“My wife got pregnant, and that was my turning point. I needed to move and secure a better future for us.”

Though he works over 65–70 hours a week, he doesn’t romanticize the UK.

“This place isn’t heaven. It comes with its own struggles, but I earn more now than I did as a teacher back in Ghana.”

He recalls converting his first UK paycheck to Ghana cedis and feeling disappointed—until he compared it to his old salary.

“It was way more than what I earned monthly in Ghana.”

Sammy also warns others against glamorizing migration.

“My friend left a GHC 10,000 job in Ghana for the UK. Now she’s under pressure and full of regrets.”

Despite having a father-in-law already living in the UK, Sammy says he had to find his own way.

“Everyone’s journey is different. I started from scratch and carved my own path.”

His advice to aspiring migrants?

“Don’t condemn where you are. Learn, prepare, and take bold but informed steps. Even the UK has its share of hardship—but with hard work, progress is possible.”
