Ghanaian living in the UK, Abraham Addai, joined DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide to share his migration story from Ghana to the UK in May 2023.

He reflected, “Life in Ghana wasn’t bad. I had money and lived comfortably. If you want paradise, Ghana is heaven. It’s peaceful, and you can even call in sick and rest. People in Ghana really chill.”

Though he had once considered using the Libya route through a friend, his brother, already in the UK, eventually helped him travel legally. He confessed that he used to believe “money grows on trees” abroad until reality hit. “When you arrive, you realize it’s real-life war out here.”

Addai was a hustler back home, weaving Kente before school. Today, he works in the UK, thanks to the support of his brother and the grace of God. But he warned: “Most Ghanaians abroad are envious. There’s no love — they smile and stab you in the back. I’ve experienced it firsthand.”

He noted that many Ghanaians abroad have paused their projects back home due to the cedi’s appreciation. He asked, “If you can raise huge money for a connection man, why not take that same energy, get serious with a job in Ghana, and stay?”

He also believes that with the experience gained abroad, he could outperform someone living in Ghana if both were given GHC 100,000. “My foreign experience has taught me that money abroad doesn’t come easy — you work hard before a white man gives you anything.”

He added that while skill workers can make good money in the UK, living isn’t as easy as it looks. “If you see someone traveling looking worn out, that’s the real borga. Some are stuck abroad.”
