AKlass, the Ghanaian CEO and co-founder of Taptap Send, recently sat down with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide to discuss the changing exchange rate between the US dollar and the Ghanaian cedi, and how it is impacting remittances to Ghana.
According to AKlass, the strengthening of the cedi and the depreciating dollar have led to a noticeable drop in money transfers through the Taptap Send platform. He encouraged Ghanaians living abroad to send money home now before the cedi strengthens further, which could reduce the value of their remittances. “If you have any ongoing projects in Ghana or want to support your family, this is the best time to send money,” he advised.
He also touched on the often misleading portrayal of life abroad, noting that people mostly share the beautiful parts of their lives overseas while hiding the struggles. “Some people can pay rent and bills abroad and still have time to relax, but that’s not the reality for everyone,” he said. With over 10 years of experience living abroad, AKlass shared the lessons he has learned along the way.
He spoke about his personal journey—how he left forklift driving after his hours were drastically cut from 60 to just 5 per week. This prompted him to return to his passion for freelance photography. “Everyone abroad needs to develop a skill,” he emphasized, recalling how he started out at a printing press with his father and once dreamed of becoming a building contractor before moving into marketing and tech.
AKlass noted that not everyone is destined to be a professor or academic, and success can take many forms. “Some rich people abroad eventually return to their roots to give back to their communities,” he added.
Besides leading Taptap Send, AKlass is a freelance photographer and proud of how far the money transfer company has come. “Taptap Send puts food on the table for me and my co-founders,” he said. He credited his breakthrough in London to a friend who introduced him to event photography. His viral photos from an “Akwaaba” event helped him gain recognition and book more gigs.
Taptap Send continues to give back to its users. For Mother’s Day, the company surprised some customers with Akufi juice, a bag of rice, and other goodies. Looking ahead to Father’s Day, AKlass announced an upcoming promotion: users who refer 10 people using their unique code can earn the equivalent of $150 in their local currency. Between June 20th and 25th, anyone who sends at least 500 of their local currency through the app will be entered into a prize draw.
Taptap Send is also expanding its services to include money transfers to Jamaica, showing continued growth and commitment to supporting diasporans around the world.
“Let’s support our families. Let’s use the opportunity wisely,” AKlass concluded.
