Matilda, the CEO of TMF Oil and Food, is a Ghana-based entrepreneur who specializes in producing and selling high-quality dzomi (local palm oil). She recently appeared on SVTV Africa’s Business Link segment to share her inspiring journey.
Originally from the Volta Region but based in Accra, Matilda started her palm oil business just two months ago. She was inspired during a visit to her mother’s village in Abeka, where she discovered her mom’s freshly made palm oil had a unique, rich aroma. “It smelled so good I had to ask about it,” she recalled. Her mother explained it was pure dzomi, not mixed with any additives.
Matilda decided to test the market. She bought a few 4-liter gallons from her mother and took them back to Accra. She shared samples with her former colleagues at Circle, where she used to sell phones and gadgets. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive—the palm oil sold out in just three days. Encouraged, Matilda sent her mother GHC 700 to produce more, and thus TMF Oil and Food was born.
Today, Matilda sources her oil directly from the Volta Region, where her mother carefully selects and processes the palm fruits. Although still new in the business, Matilda has already shipped orders to the UK and Italy. “What people sell in Accra as palm oil doesn’t compare to my mother’s. Hers is the real dzomi,” she emphasized.
Her palm oil is sold in various sizes:
-
4 liters for GHC 270 (market price is GHC 300)
-
25 liters for GHC 960
Sometimes, she even offers 4 liters for as low as GHC 250, depending on market trends.
Matilda is passionate about her work and determined to grow the business. She believes there are many opportunities in Ghana, but most people don’t want to get their hands dirty. “Thanks to my mom’s encouragement and skills, we’ve built something special. She does the processing herself and we reinvest to grow.”
Matilda markets her products online under the handle TMF Oil and Food. While some days are slow, orders continue to grow as customers appreciate the natural quality of her palm oil.
