On Business Link with DJ Nyaami, Mr. Phanuel Kotoku, CEO of Funnel Aluminium Systems in Tema Community 5, shared his journey in the aluminium fabrication industry.
He has been in the business for 20 years and spent three and a half years learning the trade.
Growing up, his family could not afford to further his education, so he decided to pursue a skilled profession. After training, the trade significantly improved his life and supported his family. Over the years, he has faced many challenges, but his dedication and hard work have helped him overcome them.
He started his shop in Tema Community 1, later moved to Community 4, and finally settled in Community 5.
Throughout his career, he has trained 15 apprentices, all of whom have successfully opened their own workshops. He mentioned that while many people, including women, are interested in learning the trade, financial difficulties and travel distances often prevent them from pursuing it. However, for those who show passion and commitment, he is always willing to assist.
His business has allowed him to improve his standard of living—he now owns a piece of land where he has built a project, has married, and is raising his children. He takes pride in the fact that his trade provides for him and his family without needing to rely on others.
As an artisan, customer communication is key to his success. He ensures transparency by updating customers on their orders and deadlines. He believes that if artisans deliver quality work on time, they will always have customers. He currently has four apprentices under his guidance and encourages young people to take up skilled work instead of relying solely on social media and technology for income.
DJ Nyaami also spoke with Christopher, one of the apprentices at Phanuel Aluminium Systems. He shared that he previously worked in a pharmacy but decided to learn a trade for long-term stability. He joined the shop early last year but was initially uncertain about his path. After three months of training, he now sees the value of being self-employed, as it offers more freedom and opportunities for financial growth.
Another apprentice, Osaka, has been learning aluminium fabrication for two and a half years. He initially wanted to learn typing, but upon moving to Tema from Kumasi, he realized that aluminium work had better prospects. He noted that many people now prefer sliding doors and glass windows over wooden frames, making aluminium fabrication a high-demand skill. He advises the youth to acquire a trade because no one can take it away from them. According to him, skilled work ensures financial security and stability.
