Bernard Akwa, a Ghanaian currently in Mexico narrated his travel journey from Italy to the Mexico border and how he almost lost his life to Mexican mafias.

Mr Akwa disclosed that he left behind his family in Italy and boarded a flight to Mexico to cross the US border. In an interview with SVTV Africa’s DJ Nyaami, Bernard mentioned that he left Italy in June 2024 and is still in a Mexico border town hoping to cross to the US.

According to Bernard, Mexico has become the most dangerous country to cross as some Mexicans have resorted to kidnapping travellers and money extortion.

“There were over 400 people at the hideout. They told us that they would help us cross the border but we stayed there for a month before taking us to a negotiation house. I called my wife in Italy to send them $4500 and they released me a week later. They shot two people in front of me for not getting the money,” he narrated.

The kidnappers transported them to Ciudad Juarez, a city in Mexico and left them there. Fortunately, an agent connected Bernard to an NGO that provides shelter and food. Bernard added that he hopes to cross the border soon.
