Germany-based Ghanaian Jane Donkoh narrated how her ex-husband physically abused her for years and threatened to kill her if she reported it to the police.
Speaking on SVTV AFRICA, Jane mentioned that her ex-husband travelled to Italy while she lived with his mother and eventually came for her. But she had to flee to Germany after seven months in Italy.
According to Jane, the abuse started in Ghana, but she never spoke about it because of love. However, it got worse in Italy after she found out he had been in a relationship with another woman in Italy for five years, planning to marry her.
“The abuse got worse in Italy, but I loved him. He threatened to kill me if I reported. After I got to Italy, his side chick came to the house because she heard about me. She was the one who helped me flee Italy.
One time, he beat me to a pulp, and I had no one to call but his side chick. I didn’t understand the language, and I had not started working. I’m thankful to her for helping me flee Italy,” she narrated.
According to Jane, her ex-husband told her that his ‘church elder mother’ had to approve of her because he could have sex with her. She had to stay in the house for almost a decade, serving his mother.
“I spent nine years in his mother’s house, but we were not married yet. His mother was among the church elders but did not mind that we came home late. She never advised her son to marry me and had a child before he travelled. The abuse started in Ghana, but I loved him,” she added.
