Mr Akwasi Donor, a Ghanaian based in Italy, shared his perilous journey crossing the Libyan waters to escape Ghana’s economic crisis in search of better opportunities in Europe.

Speaking on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Akwasi revealed that he quit his job as a commercial driver in Ghana and left behind his wife and kids for a better life abroad. Akwasi acknowledged that despite the fatal nature of the journey, he had no other option than to flee Ghana.

“I worked in Libya for two and half years for money to pay to cross the sea. I endured a lot in Libya. I paid GHS1500 to cross the sea, but we couldn’t go, and there was no way I was returning to Ghana because I knew how it was there.

If you travel through Libya, there are three things you must know. It is either you make it to Europe, die or be arrested and deported. I knew I could die, but I had to go. So with the money I made in Libya, I bought some things and sent them to my wife in Ghana along with some money,” he said.

Moreover, Akwasi added that he saw countless bodies floating in the sea, but there was no turning back. He expressed his excitement after they were rescued by Italian rescuers.

“We were about 128 migrants in the boat. The Ghanaians were about 29. I rolled over on the ground out of excitement when we finally got to land. I have six siblings, and my mom is a single parent. I’m the second born. I had to support my younger siblings’ education. So surviving the journey was a big deal for me,” he added.
