Germany-based Ghanaian Najat Ashong revealed that her Bulgarian ex-husband seized her passport after taking her to Bulgaria.

Speaking with SVTV AFRICA’s DJ Nyaami, Najat indicated that not only did her ex-husband seize her passport, but he refused to help process her resident document. As a result, she couldn’t move around freely or get a job to support herself.

Najat met her Bulgarian ex in Ghana at the age of 17. Upon their meeting, he expressed interest in her and left for Bulgaria within two weeks despite being underage. She acknowledged that she accepted to travel with him “as a way out of poverty.”

“We were just lovers in Ghana, and I was 17 years old, but my family allowed me to go with him because it is ‘abrokyire’ (abroad). We signed a marriage certificate in Bulgaria, but he refused to pay for me to get a residency. He said I’d leave him if I get the residence permit, and he also seized my Ghanaian passport.”

According to Najat, she got fed up with him and risked deportation to report him to the police.

“He confirmed that I was his wife and questioned why he had not fixed my documents. Immediately the police tried to cuff him, he went inside to bring my passport. I packed my bags and left the house. He told me I would not survive in Bulgaria as a Black woman, but I still left him,” she added.

Eventually, Najat met another Bulgarian businessman who helped her get documents.
