Amaniampong Collins Opens Up About His Life in Turkey

Amaniampong Collins, a Ghanaian based in Turkey, has shared the harsh realities of living and working abroad under difficult conditions.

Collins works in a lighting and décor company, where he also sleeps due to his situation. According to him, police raids are frequent, forcing him and others to constantly stay hidden. Because of this, he rarely goes out and spends most of his time indoors, living what he describes as a restricted life.

He revealed that he traveled to Turkey using a conference visa but has been unable to secure a residence permit. As a result, he has overstayed and now lives in fear, avoiding public spaces to escape arrest.

In the course of his struggle, Collins admitted that his sister—who also lives in Turkey—had warned him about the situation on the ground, especially how businesses were not doing well. Unfortunately, he did not take her advice seriously at the time.

In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show, he explained that life abroad has not met his expectations, despite the sacrifices he made to travel.

“I live like a prisoner. I’m always indoors, I sleep at my workplace, and I hardly go out,” he said, adding that he is still financially struggling and has not achieved much since arriving.

Collins also disclosed that he and about ten others each paid around $3,000 to secure their visas to Turkey, a decision he now sees as a hard lesson.

Although he once returned to Ghana, he did not settle his overstay penalty because he initially had no intention of going back. However, he later returned to Turkey again, hoping things would improve.

Despite everything, he tries to survive by minimizing his expenses, believing that within one or two years, he may be able to save enough capital to start something of his own.

Collins now shares his story as a warning to others, emphasizing that life abroad is not always easy and that careful planning is necessary before making such life-changing decisions.
