Boakye Regrets Move to Netherlands, Plans Return to Ghana After Harsh Reality Abroad
A Ghanaian man identified as Boakye has opened up about his disappointing experience in the Netherlands, barely a month after relocating in search of better opportunities.
In an interview on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami, Boakye revealed that he paid GH¢150,000 to an agent to secure a one-month Schengen visa to travel abroad.
However, his expectations of a better life were quickly shattered upon arrival.
According to him, finding work has been extremely difficult, and even basic jobs like dishwashing have not been easy to secure. He disclosed that after struggling for weeks, he eventually got a dishwashing job but broke down in tears while doing it due to frustration and disappointment.
Boakye also noted that the cost of living is high, and the income he has been able to earn—between GH¢15,000 and GH¢20,000 monthly—is not worth the hardship and loneliness he is experiencing.
“I have called my wife to return to Ghana. Life here is not easy. If you are comfortable in Ghana, don’t rush to travel abroad,” he advised.
He further revealed that he did not formally resign from his job in Ghana before traveling, as he initially believed better opportunities awaited him in Europe.
Now, he says he has no intention of staying longer and is making plans to return home to continue his work in Ghana.
Boakye also cautioned others against blindly trusting agents who promise easy travel opportunities, alleging that many of them do not even travel abroad themselves despite facilitating such arrangements.
His story adds to growing concerns about irregular migration and the realities many Ghanaians face abroad, despite the perception of better living conditions.
