Agya Kwabena, popularly known as “The President”, is a Ghanaian MC and community leader based in Birmingham and the Midlands, UK. He recently opened up in an interview on Daily Hustle Worldwide with DJ Nyaami about his journey from a comfortable life in Ghana to navigating life abroad.
“My mom brought me to the UK to see the world. I was doing well in Ghana — I had my car, my own business, and stability — but I wanted to explore,” he shared. Upon arrival, he quickly realized life abroad was not as easy as he imagined. “I moved to Birmingham because it’s more affordable. Things like rent and food are much higher elsewhere,” he said.
In Birmingham, he co-founded the Birmingham Ghana All Stars, a local football team, and became a staple at cultural events, including weddings, naming ceremonies, and funerals. “Everyone knows me because of my MC work,” he said.
Agya also discussed the stark differences between life in Ghana and the UK:
“In Ghana, I drove straight from home to work. Here, now I take two buses, and if I miss one, I have to take an Uber — it’s expensive. Life is different, and you need to adjust.”
He advises Ghanaians considering the UK
: “I don’t recommend coming on a visitor visa expecting help. You must be prepared to fend for yourself. Life abroad is a real test, and many who come don’t return to Ghana to restart their businesses because they’ve suffered too much.”
Despite the challenges, Agya remains grounded: “If I have, I give. If I don’t, I stay reserved. I don’t pressure myself unnecessarily.”
