From Biochemistry Graduate to Fast Food Boss: Claudia’s Inspiring Journey in Kumasi

Claudia is a Ghanaian entrepreneur based in Kumasi, where she runs a fast-growing fast food business. She sells fried rice, jollof rice, and noodles, and according to her, she sees money every single day. She started the business in June last year, and this is now her eighth month in operation.

A graduate of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) with a degree in Biochemistry, Claudia never imagined she would end up in the food business. After school, she attended numerous job interviews, but the common response was always, “We’ll call you back.” The calls never came.

She later secured a job at a hospital laboratory as a scientist, but the salary was too small and the working environment was not healthy for her. She resigned and took up another role as an administrator, but again, the pay could not meet her expenses. Frustrated and depressed after being unemployed for some time, she made a life-changing decision.

One day, she told her mother she wanted to become a restaurant owner, and she decided not to let her degree limit her. She found an abandoned restaurant space, contacted the owner, and negotiated to start small because she couldn’t afford the two-year rent they initially requested.

Claudia started her business with just GH¢500 and some coins. She bought 5kg of rice, quarter chicken, spring onions, and a few basic ingredients. She used cooking utensils from home to prepare her first meals. Thankfully, customers loved the food. The taste was delicious, and word began to spread.

Today, her business has grown. She now does deliveries, has workers assisting her, and operates from a proper container space. She emphasizes quality, saying she does not buy cheap rice. Instead, she uses high-quality basmati rice for her jollof and fried rice to maintain her standard.

In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide Show, Claudia shared that her journey has not been easy but has been rewarding. She explained that leaving office jobs to start her own business was one of the best decisions she has made, adding that determination and consistency have helped her grow steadily despite starting with very little capital.
