Esther: Northern Ghanaian Woman Breaking Barriers as a Ford Commercial Driver

Esther, a determined female driver from northern Ghana, recently appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami, and she returned to the show to share her inspiring journey.

“I don’t drive trucks anymore,” Esther says. “I now drive American Ford commercial vehicles for another company, transporting passengers from Cape Coast to Accra (Kaneshie). I started this job six months ago, and the salary is much better than what I earned at my previous truck company. The working hours suit me perfectly.”

Esther is currently the only female Ford driver at her station, and she handles trips from Cape Coast to Accra and back. “Some passengers are excited to see a female driver, while others are a bit hesitant at first,” she shares.

On safety, Esther adds, “I report careless drivers to the police, but most companies don’t take it seriously. In my previous job, if you reported an issue, you risked being fired. Here, the company is very professional and serious about operations.”

She also appreciates the financial stability her new job provides: “I see money in the business every day, and I get paid at the end of the month. If you don’t show up early, you won’t get your share, but for those who are disciplined, the money is there. Most of my passengers are women, and they appreciate a safe, professional ride.”

Esther notes that while many women in Ghana drive, only a few are involved in commercial driving. “Many women are hesitant to overtake, but passengers like it when a woman drives confidently and safely,” she explains.

Esther’s story is a powerful example of breaking gender barriers in a male-dominated profession and inspiring other women to pursue careers in commercial driving.
