Kate Adu Agyemang, a Ghanaian footballer based in the United States and former member of the Black Queens, appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami to share her experience and grievances regarding unpaid wages.
Kate revealed that she and her teammates played in the 2016 Women’s World Cup qualifiers in France. They were promised $2,000 per match for six games but received only a fraction. “We were owed $12,000 each, but when we raised the issue, we went to the Flagstaff House, and then-President Nana Addo gave us only $4,000 each,” she said. Despite multiple petitions and letters, the payments were not fulfilled.
Frustrated by the lack of accountability, Kate made a video calling attention to the issue. She emphasized the broader problem: Ghana does not adequately support women’s football or recognize its importance. “Some players risk their lives on the field, yet the system doesn’t value female footballers or the investment in Ghana’s international reputation,” she said.
Kate expressed her love for Ghana despite the challenges: “No matter what, Ghana brought me home in spirit. Even though I play professionally in the United States, I will continue to return and share my talent with my country.” She credits her time abroad for giving her financial independence, which allowed her to speak out without fear.
Kate’s message is clear: female athletes deserve recognition, fair pay, and support to represent Ghana with pride.
