Dramani, a Ghanaian based in Alberta, Canada, recently appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami, sharing his inspiring journey from Ghana to success abroad.
Originally from Bono, Dormaa, Dramani graduated from the University of Cape Coast (UCC), where he studied Geography and Sociology and completed his national service in 2015. After graduation, he sold coconuts in Accra and later car tires in Taiwan and Norway. Through hard work and determination, he earned the opportunity to travel to Canada despite knowing no one there.
In Ghana, Dramani started a coconut business called Pure Kobe, which initially did well, but when his machinery broke and support was unavailable, he pivoted to supplying products to graduates and universities across the country. He also taught geography from 2018 to 2023, though he realized that much of what students learned wasn’t practical for life abroad.
Upon arriving in Canada, Dramani began with menial jobs, like pushing snow, and gradually learned new skills. He watched YouTube tutorials to learn painting, despite having no prior experience, and became proficient enough to make a living. He later expanded his skills to vehicle detailing, cleaning large trucks, and providing professional services to major companies.
Dramani emphasizes the importance of practical skills over purely academic knowledge. “Back home, I would have resisted learning trades like painting or electrical work, but now I regret not starting earlier,” he admits. He also shares lessons learned about helping others: after bringing multiple Ghanaians and Nigerians into jobs, he lost his own position and now focuses on building himself first.
Today, Dramani works independently, running his own business. He advises young people to step out of comfort zones, learn practical skills, and be prepared to work hard when they move abroad. “You can start small, but consistency and perseverance make the difference,” he says.
