Stella Osahene, a Ghanaian based in Hamburg, Germany, has shared her real-life experience on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide Show with DJ Nyaami.
According to Stella, she travelled abroad in 2004, over 21 years ago, after working with Ghana Customs for 10 years. At the time, traveling abroad was the trend. Even people with good jobs felt pressured to leave Ghana.
She first travelled to Italy in 2002 and later continued to Germany (Hamburg), believing life abroad would be better. “Those days, the ‘borga’ life made you feel abroad was heaven compared to Ghana,” she said.
In Germany, Stella settled down, learned the language, worked, got her residence permit, married, and gave birth. But over time, she realized that abroad is not automatically better.
Today, Stella has peace of mind because of Ghana.
With money she saved abroad, she invested back home:
Pure water (sachet water) business
Provision shop (wholesale)
Poultry farm
Businesses based at Pankrono Estate, Kumasi
She employs workers and has managers running her businesses even when she is not in Ghana.
“It’s all about mindset. Anything you want to do, be determined,” she advised.
Stella travels to Ghana often because her children are there, and she says life in Ghana now gives her more satisfaction than staying permanently in Germany.
She added a strong warning:
“If you have a good, lucrative job in Ghana, don’t leave it just because people are traveling.”
