Abena Dargati: I Left My Office Job for Agribusiness and I Don’t Wait for Month-End Salary

Abena Dargati is a Ghanaian businesswoman who has ventured into agribusiness, boldly leaving the comfort of an office job to build her own business. According to her, she no longer waits for month-end salary because her business now sustains her.

Speaking about her journey, Abena revealed that she started agribusiness about two years ago, paused along the way, and has now returned fully committed to it. She believes that timing, experience, and knowledge play a key role in business success.

She shared that after university, she worked as a cashier at a cold store. At the time, many people looked down on the job, but today, the knowledge she gained about cold storage, food handling, and sales has become a strong foundation for her current business.

Abena advised young people not to rush only for quick money. According to her, building and maintaining good relationships is very important in business. “If you need help one day, relationships matter,” she said, adding that many youths today tend to burn bridges instead of nurturing them.

She also encouraged young entrepreneurs not to be shy about making money. “If you are shy, you will struggle in business. I’m not shy,” she stated, explaining that confidence is key, whether you are selling online or moving from place to place to market your products.

Abena cautioned against comparing real life to the flashy lifestyles seen on social media, noting that many of those images do not reflect reality. She recalled how people laughed at her after university when she decided to go into farming, but she remained focused.

Today, Abena Dargati sells organic foods, including groundnut paste and roasted groundnuts, and also runs an online shop at Canta Maria.

Her story serves as motivation to young people: embrace humble beginnings, learn from every experience, ignore societal pressure, and build something sustainable with patience and hard work.
