Family Demands Justice for George Brentuo, Ghanaian Security Man Stabbed to Death in the Bronx
Anastasia Brentuo, a Ghanaian based in Vienna, has broken her silence over the tragic death of her elder brother, George Brentuo, the Ghanaian security man who was stabbed to death in the Bronx, New York.
Speaking in an emotional account, Anastasia explained that her brother had returned from Ghana on December 31, after spending time with family back home. According to her, George had traveled to Ghana just a week earlier to visit relatives and personally called her after arriving back in the United States, sounding well and hopeful.
On the day of the incident, Anastasia revealed that George’s supervisor had asked him to come to work, but he chose not to follow the regular schedule. Instead, he went out on his own routine, carrying his lunch box, and walked two blocks away from his apartment, according to police reports.
She narrated that while George was on his way, an unidentified man bypassed a woman, later turned back, kicked George, hooked his leg, and stabbed him multiple times. After the attack, the suspect reportedly crossed the road and fled. Despite his injuries, George managed to walk a short distance to a grocery store to seek help. Emergency services were called, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“My brother was peaceful, quiet, and never offended anyone,” Anastasia said. “He didn’t even get the chance to talk. He did not deserve to die this way.”
Police have since arrested the suspect, who they claim has a history of mental illness and is currently being held in a psychiatric facility for treatment. According to the family, the suspect is a repeat offender who has robbed several people in the past and previously stabbed someone who survived. George, they say, is the first person the suspect has killed. The man had reportedly served three years in prison, was recently released, and has also been involved in attacks on police officers.
The family is now calling for justice and stricter measures. “He keeps committing crimes, goes back to prison, comes out, and offends again. This time, it cost my brother his life,” Anastasia stated.
George Brentuo was not married, but he left behind two daughters, whom the family says are devastated by the loss. Their mother, now a grandmother, has lived in the United States for many years and helped bring seven family members to America. She is currently on pension and frequently travels between Ghana and the U.S.
Anastasia also addressed false information circulating on social media, allegedly from a woman who contacted Bronx media outlets and claimed George was killed due to issues involving his “sons and a girlfriend.” The family strongly denied the claims.
“My brother had no sons—only two daughters. That story is completely false, and she must retract it or face legal consequences,” Anastasia warned.
The family plans to hold a candlelight vigil on Monday in George’s memory. His body has not yet been released and is currently at a funeral home, following autopsy and police procedures. The family has confirmed plans to transport his body to Ghana for burial, in line with Islamic customs, which require a quick burial.
Anastasia used the opportunity to caution the public, saying, “Everyone should be alert and aware of their surroundings. America has become dangerous lately.”
