Kwabena Sunkwa Reflects on 30 Years Abroad and His Journey in Music

Kwabena Sunkwa, a Ghanaian based in London and Hanover, UK, opened up about his life, career, and experiences abroad in an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide Show.

According to Kwabena, he first left Ghana 26 years ago, arriving in America before traveling to Germany, following fellow Ghanaian artists Kwame Miki and Kwame Ghaba. He also collaborated with legendary musician Daddy Lumba in 1991, marking a significant milestone in his music career.

Kwabena candidly admitted that while he made considerable money during his time in Germany, he often spent it chasing women and did not invest in property or start a family. “Not all of us came into this world to reproduce,” he reflected. “I comforted myself with my work and music, and focused on my personal path.”

Some of his notable hits which contributed to his lasting impact in the Ghanaian music scene.

Sharing advice for Ghanaians abroad, Kwabena highlighted the challenges of navigating new environments.

“When you are a Ghanaian and you travel, it is tricky. Every advice you take matters, but sometimes older Ghanaians don’t have all the correct information. You have to find the right sources and work hard. Learn a trade—this will help you secure a job and survive.”

Kwabena also reflected on the changes in Ghana over the years.

“Things changed faster in Ghana than abroad. Kwame Ghaba was rich in Ghana, had pharmacies and companies, and thought he would never go broke. But today, he is hustling in America, and many businesses back home have collapsed.”

Two years ago, Kwabena returned to Ghana with hopes of investing in projects. He shared that he successfully built a house at Media but abandoned another project at New Bortinor after losing money.

“I will only retire and settle in Ghana,” he stated.

Despite the challenges, Kwabena Sunkwa remains proud of his journey and contributions to Ghanaian music.
