Ghanaian Student in the U.S. Shares Journey to Pursuing a Master’s in Public Health

Joseph, a Ghanaian currently studying in Illinois, United States, appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide Show with DJ Nyaami to share his journey of pursuing higher education abroad.

Joseph’s educational journey began in Ghana, where he attended school in Kumasi and later studied at UCC. After completing his Bachelor of Arts in Public Health, he decided to pursue a master’s degree in the United States.

“I initially looked into the process and realized it would be expensive, so I searched for scholarships to fund my studies,” he explained.

Securing a scholarship was a competitive process. Joseph shared how he identified a professor outside his department whose research aligned with his proposal. With the support of this professor and careful coordination with other potential supervisors, he was eventually awarded a scholarship.

“I was initially on the waiting list, but I kept communicating with my supervisor. Eventually, I received the email confirming my scholarship,” he said.

The U.S. visa process required proof of funding, but because Joseph had a scholarship, he was not asked to provide additional financial support.

“At the embassy, they asked about my study plans, research, and scholarship. Most students practice with mock interviews beforehand, but I was confident. Walking through the tunnel for my first flight was surreal,” he recalled.

Since arriving, Joseph has adapted to life in America. “It’s nice, clean, and the people are lovely. The system here works well. Studying is stressful with many assignments and projects, but it’s rewarding. As an international student, I am allowed to work 20 hours a week on campus,” he explained.

Joseph rents accommodation off-campus due to the high cost of campus housing and emphasized the importance of proper etiquette and communication in American society. He has also attended academic conferences, including one in Washington D.C., as part of his master’s program, which spans two years.

Reflecting on his experience, Joseph encourages others to explore educational opportunities abroad while preparing thoroughly for the challenges and responsibilities that come with studying in a new country.
