Diana Nartey, a Ghanaian woman from Tema–Abokobi, has shared a heartbreaking story of abandonment, sacrifice, and betrayal after her husband traveled to the United Kingdom and cut ties with her and their children. Speaking in an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show, Diana narrated how her life took a painful turn despite her unwavering support for the man she trusted.
According to Diana, she met her husband while he was working as a shop attendant in Madina, earning a small wage and owning no business of his own. He assured her that he loved her and had no problem taking care of her. During their relationship, she became pregnant, and he expressed interest in marrying her. At the time, Diana was hustling to survive—selling roasted tuna, head pan, Burkina drinks, and fresh fish to support herself.
When the man’s father passed away, the family acknowledged Diana as his wife during the funeral rites. He later officially informed both families of his intention to marry her, but claimed he lacked the funds to do so. Diana’s brother, who lived in the UK, supported the marriage process by sending GH¢2,000. Despite this, financial hardship deepened, and Diana lost her job as they both struggled.
Diana revealed that her first child later became a pharmacist and occasionally supported her with GH¢200 a day. Life continued with challenges, and when another death occurred in the family, marriage discussions resurfaced. Her brother gave the man three months to officially marry Diana, but he repeatedly claimed he had no money.
Out of concern for their future, Diana contacted her brother in the UK to help her partner travel abroad, as he was jobless and had no skills. Although her brother had planned to buy a house, he sacrificed that plan to sponsor the man’s travel. Through prayers and church support, the man eventually secured a five-year UK visa as a dependent on another woman’s visa. Shockingly, on the very day the visa was granted, he became paralyzed. Diana prayed fervently, and he later recovered.
He traveled to the UK in June. At the airport, Diana gave him her smartphone to use abroad. She sold her shop and moved into a kiosk, believing this sacrifice would lead to a better future. Once he arrived, he insisted she move out of the kiosk, promising to support her. Diana’s brother helped him secure a job, and he began sending chop money every weekend. He also promised to set Diana up with a new shop and encouraged her to push for marriage.
He later sent GH¢4,000 to support her business and claimed he was earning about GH¢8,000 weekly. Over time, however, his attitude changed. He became distant and easily annoyed. Eventually, Diana could no longer reach him. She later learned through his sister that he had returned to Ghana. Diana’s brother gave him money and items for the children, but he allegedly gave everything to another woman instead.
Diana further disclosed that the man had a child with another woman and began blocking and unblocking her repeatedly. The emotional shock was so severe that she collapsed into a coma when she learned the truth. Through TikTok, she discovered he had met a new woman abroad and was planning to marry her during Christmas.
Out of frustration and pain, Diana went live on TikTok to share her story. The woman her husband had entered into a contract marriage with later begged her to stop, fearing deportation. Diana recounted a painful moment when the woman entered the room and rocked her husband while Diana was still on a call with him.
Eventually, the man accused Diana of complaining too much to his friends and abandoned her completely. Although he is currently in Ghana, he has not visited his children and has still not fulfilled his promise to rebuild Diana’s shop. When he saw the TikTok video, he asked how much she wanted to settle the matter. Diana mentioned GH¢200,000, which he initially agreed to, asking her to take down the video. Later, she realized he had no intention of paying and was only deceiving her.
Diana concluded by stating that life abroad is not a guaranteed success story. She stressed that even people in professions like IT struggle without luck and connections. According to her, traveling abroad may benefit the unskilled or unemployed, but it does not automatically translate into responsibility, loyalty, or a better life. Her story stands as a cautionary tale about sacrifice, trust, and the harsh realities behind the dream of traveling abroad.
