Derrick is a Ghanaian currently based in Milan, Italy. He has lived in Italy for four months, although he left Ghana nearly two years ago in search of better opportunities.
Back in Ghana, Derrick worked as a Pragya (tricycle) driver. Determined to travel abroad, he informed his brother of his decision and began the journey by bus at night, heading through Agadez.
After arriving in Libya, Derrick survived by working as a plasterer. In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide Show, he revealed that along the journey, he met an agent who charged 20,000 (currency unspecified), but Derrick managed to pay 18,000 to be transported to Libya.
From Libya, Derrick and others attempted to cross the sea. During the journey, their inflatable boat developed a problem, and they were stranded. Fortunately, fishermen nearby noticed them and alerted rescue authorities. Derrick explained that on another boat that left earlier with about 60 people, only 16 survived, which deeply frightened him.
Because he could not afford a life jacket, Derrick used an empty bottle to help himself float while waiting for rescue. When the rescue ship finally arrived from Italy, he said everyone was overwhelmed with joy. They were taken to Lampedusa, where they were given shelter, food, and a place to rest.
Comparing life in Italy to Ghana and Libya, Derrick admits that Italy is better in terms of safety and basic support. However, looking back on his journey, he says he would never choose that route again and strongly advises others not to attempt traveling to Europe through the desert and the sea.
Although he has been in Italy for nearly two years, Derrick says he has not been able to work. He currently receives €75 per month, but he notes that accommodation and food are provided for free—morning, afternoon, and evening meals.
Despite these supports, Derrick believes the journey itself is not worth the risk and hopes his story will serve as a warning to others considering the same path.
