Michael Akakaduro is a Ghanaian based in the United States who appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide with DJ Nyaami. Back in Ghana, he used to work for a mining company. He explained that when he first booked his American visa appointment, one of the officers questioned why he had not continued his university education. Eventually, he was granted his visa.
He received a tourist visa to the US in 2009. Although his salary in Ghana was good, he felt that receiving it monthly made it seem as though he was being paid only once a year. When he arrived in the United States, his visa was close to expiring, so he had to return to Ghana in 2010. He did not understand that he needed to stay in Ghana for six months to a year before re-entering the US, so he went back after just two weeks. At the airport, a lady explained the rules to him, so he returned home. Seven months later, he received approval to return to America.
By that time, he had resigned from the mining company, and the company eventually collapsed. He bought a Toyota Camry to show appreciation to the lady who had helped him at the airport, but he was unable to locate her.
On his second trip to the US, he didn’t have proper documentation, so he worked “under the table.” He kept faith that one day he would get his papers. He later purchased a truck and began progressing gradually. Through the dating app POF, he met a white woman, and the two eventually married. She filed immigration papers for him, but one Ghanaian acquaintance told her that he had only married her because he wanted his documents.
During their immigration interview, a Chinese consular officer interrogated the wife and warned her that she would go to jail if the marriage was fake. Because of the Ghanaian man who had snitched, Michael’s papers were denied. Deportation proceedings were initiated against him, and he hired a lawyer. His colleagues at work assured him that they would support him, and he kept his faith strong. Eventually, authorities concluded that he posed no threat. While working as a quality control officer at DFM, where his was the final signature before products were approved, he received a call informing him that his green card had finally been approved.
After the approval, his wife returned to apologize, but he ignored her. She would sometimes ask him for sex, but he declined. With his green card in hand, he traveled back to Ghana, spent a month, and returned to his job in the US as quality control, a position he held for four years.
He later pursued his CDL, passed the required tests, and began driving big trucks. A friend introduced him to a new company where he was trained for 18 months. He became highly skilled and eventually applied to another company, Rocky Mountain Crude Oil, where he now transports crude oil and handles technical analysis. He still has family in Ghana. Michael shared that he had been married before but eventually divorced because the relationship was not beneficial to him.
