George Poku, a Ghanaian who lived in the United Kingdom for several years, recently appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide with DJ Nyaami, where he openly discussed his decision to leave abroad and return home. During the interview, he stated boldly that “abrokyire is modern-day slavery,” a comment that sparked heavy backlash from many viewers who felt he was ungrateful or exaggerating. Despite the criticism, George stood by his words and explained that life abroad had become draining, stressful, and far different from what people in Ghana imagine.

According to George, he had always dreamed of returning home, even though he told many people in the past that he would “never return to Ghana.” But after years of hard work and emotional struggles in the UK, he finally made the decision to come back. He arrived in Ghana just two weeks ago, hoping for a fresh start, peace of mind, and the chance to rebuild his life on his own terms.

However, returning home has come with its own challenges. George revealed that his mother is no longer speaking to him because he left abroad and came back to Ghana. To her, leaving the UK—where many parents expect their children to stay, work, and support the family—was a disappointment. George admitted that this reaction has been painful, but he believes he made the right choice for his wellbeing.

He expressed that people in Ghana often do not understand the pressures abroad. While many assume that life outside is full of money and comfort, he insists that the reality is very different. For him, the loneliness, endless bills, and constant pressure became too much, and choosing Ghana was his way of reclaiming his life.

George hopes that with time his mother will come around, and he plans to stay in Ghana permanently despite the criticism and emotional challenges. His story highlights a growing trend of Ghanaians abroad returning home to seek peace, family connection, and a more balanced life—proving that success is not defined only by living overseas.
