Young Ghanaian Entrepreneur Hilton Shares His Journey Into the Sobolo and Local Drinks Business

Hilton, a Ghanaian entrepreneur, appeared on SVTV Africa’s Business Link with DJ Nyaami, where he shared how he built his sobolo and fresh juice business from the ground up. He explained that he started the venture while still in school in 2023. Hilton comes from Kyamsin and attended Opoku Ware School, graduating in 2015. After SHS, he stayed home for four years before gaining admission to the University of Ghana, Legon, where he studied Business Administration.

According to Hilton, an aunt in America once advised him not to rush into traveling abroad but to start something in Ghana first. She encouraged him to build himself locally, and if an opportunity abroad ever came, he could grab it with confidence. One day, he had a dream in which he was fixing something in a fridge—it turned out to be sobolo. That dream inspired him to start producing the drink. He began the business with a friend who later upgraded his own process and left, leaving Hilton to continue alone.

He recalled that at one point, fifty bottles of sobolo fermented and had to be thrown away. A lady he saw in a Facebook interview helped him understand the proper method, and since then his production has improved. Sobolo became a side hustle for him on campus because it required very little capital. During his days in Legon, he supplied a shop on campus with his drinks.

After completing university—and noticing many of his friends still struggling to find jobs—Hilton decided to take his business more seriously. He invested GH¢1,800 into the sobolo production. From that investment, he has already made a net profit of GH¢13,000. Although he supplies a few shops for now, he believes that supplying 500 pieces or more to bigger shops would significantly increase his earnings.

He expressed gratitude to his uncle, Mr. Adade, who has been very supportive and even gifted him a fridge to boost his production. Hilton has since expanded from just sobolo to adding fresh juice under the brand Hilton Food and Beverages, also known as Hit’s Fresh Juice. He confidently stated that they are capable of producing even one million orders if the market demands it, adding that the business is fully prepared and “multilateral” enough to handle large production.

Hilton’s story reflects the growing entrepreneurial spirit among young Ghanaians who are driven by creativity, resilience, and the desire to build something meaningful without relying solely on traveling abroad.
