Ghanaian Young Lady Breaks Barriers as Heavy Truck Driver

Hannah, a determined young Ghanaian woman from Konongo, is breaking stereotypes in the transport industry as one of the few female heavy truck and trailer drivers in the country.

Speaking in an interview with DJ Nyaami on Business Link, Hannah revealed that her passion for driving started at a young age. She grew up dreaming of becoming either a soldier or a professional driver, but circumstances prevented her from pursuing formal schooling. Instead, she followed her passion and chose the path of driving trailers.

Hannah began learning to drive in 2018, and by 2020, she had become fully skilled. She shared that she started out as a mate on a fertilizer truck, where she learned the ropes and gradually built her confidence.

However, her journey wasn’t easy. Her parents did not support her decision at first. According to her, her father preferred she learned a trade such as hairdressing or tailoring. But Hannah had seen many graduates struggle to find jobs, so she decided to chase her own dream. She trained for two years without telling her parents where she was learning to drive.

Today, she proudly holds an EF driver’s license, and even the father who once discouraged her is now proud of her achievements as a lady trailer driver.

Despite her skills and qualifications, Hannah says she has struggled to secure employment. She has written several applications and even reached out to companies known for employing women drivers, such as Ladies Buns and Star Oil, but she is yet to receive any positive feedback.

Still, Hannah remains optimistic. She has seen more women take up roles in heavy-duty driving and believes her opportunity will come. For her, the journey is about proving that women can excel in fields traditionally dominated by men.
