Oscar, a Ghanaian based in Germany, recently appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show hosted by DJ Nyaami. He works with a seasonal company in Munich that specializes in railway maintenance and sensor technology, serving as a Project Manager in civil engineering project management.

He has lived in Germany for seven years, including four years as a student. “I haven’t met any other Ghanaian doing the same job,” he said proudly.

Oscar was born in Accra New Town. His father was a police officer, and his mother sold cassava at the Malata Market. During his youth, he played football for Paloma Stars. He attended Panaman/Kokomlemle Cluster of Schools for his basic education and later studied Agricultural Science—specializing in Animal Husbandry—at Aquinas Secondary School.

Hailing from Agbozome in the Volta Region, Oscar speaks Ewe, Hausa, and Twi. After moving to Germany, he learned to speak fluent German.

Back in Ghana, Oscar faced challenges finding a job after university. “I stayed home for five years without work,” he recalled. During that time, he studied German at the Goethe Institute for five years, eventually being invited to teach the language there.

At one point, he even tried joining the military, using his mother’s GHC 1,000 to pay a bribe—but it didn’t work out. With a background in Agricultural Science, he wanted to start a farm but lacked funding, so he decided to create his own path.

He later applied to study Resource Management abroad, but the blocked account requirement of €10,000 was a challenge. Fortunately, KNUST introduced the same program, allowing him to start in Ghana and complete it in Germany. His first degree was in Agriculture from KNUST, followed by an MBA in Resource Management.

Oscar eventually pursued engineering studies at TU Farden, completing the program after eight years. “I cut myself off from everyone and focused. I didn’t even know how to drive, but I learned,” he shared.

“Railway work is highly specialized—you don’t stay in one place,” Oscar explained. As a trained engineer, he earns around €5,000 a month after tax deductions (gross salary about €6,000).

He advises anyone planning to move to Germany to pursue high-demand careers such as medicine, engineering, nursing, freight forwarding, baking, social work, and culinary arts—and to learn the German language and get a driver’s license to integrate easily.

“If I ever get the chance, I’d love to help improve Ghana’s railway system,” he added.

Beyond his engineering career, Oscar also manages building projects in Ghana for Ghanaians living abroad through his firm, 5D Project Management Consult.
