Ghanaian Woman in the UK Regrets Relocation, Says She Wants to Return Home Despite Marriage Risk

A Ghanaian woman identified as Philomina, who currently lives in the United Kingdom with her children, has tearfully shared her regret about relocating abroad. Speaking in an interview on SVTV Africa’s “Matter Dey” show with DJ Nyaami, Philomina revealed that moving to the UK has brought her more pain than progress.

According to her, she and her husband sold their businesses and cars in Ghana to fund her and the children’s relocation for what they believed would be a better future. Her husband, who remains in Ghana, encouraged her to make the move so the children could enjoy greater opportunities abroad.

However, after living in the UK for a year, Philomina says she feels trapped in a life full of financial stress, high taxes, and emotional strain. “Since I relocated, I’ve been crying and struggling to cope. I pay so many taxes and sometimes have to depend on my husband in Ghana to help me cover the bills,” she lamented.

Philomina explained that although she currently lives with a relative and does not pay rent, she still struggles to manage her expenses and tax obligations, which cost her over £1,500. “There’s no steady job, but the company says I must continue paying taxes for five years before I qualify for indefinite stay,” she added.

Before relocating, Philomina ran a thriving cooking and booking business in Ghana. She says leaving everything behind for life abroad was a huge mistake. “My husband wanted me to move for the sake of the kids, but I made a wrong decision. I had a good business, and we were doing well in Ghana,” she said tearfully.

Philomina also revealed that since moving to the UK, she has been unable to support her parents financially, something she used to do regularly when she lived in Ghana. “Now, I can’t even help my family. I just want to return home, even if it will cost me my marriage,” she said.

She ended her interview with a message to others in Ghana who dream of relocating abroad: “If you are doing well in Ghana, don’t rush to travel. Abroad is not as easy as it looks.”
