Afro’s Kitchen Owner in Germany Shares Reality of Life Abroad

Afro’s Kitchen, a Ghanaian-owned restaurant in Germany, has become popular for serving a wide variety of African dishes. The owner, known as Afro, is also a regular guest on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami, where he openly discusses the realities of living abroad.

According to him, many Ghanaians in Germany struggle because of isolation. “Some people come here and cut themselves off from others. When they fall sick, they don’t get the right support and eventually pass away. Life abroad can make some people miserable, even though others manage to do well,” he said.

Afro explained that success abroad depends on timing and opportunities. “When you arrive without proper documents, you may be able to gather money, but once you get your papers, expenses increase and the little you save drops drastically. Even people in their 60s still fight over jobs here—it’s not as rosy as people imagine.”

He also highlighted fraudulent practices targeting Ghanaians in Europe. “There was a man called Mr. Ewusi who duped many people by promising them residence permits (Nkrataa). I tried to help victims get their money back, but it didn’t work. Old ‘borgas’ used to scam people, and now even the new ones are doing the same. Some even take advantage of pregnant women just to deceive them.”

Afro dismissed myths about shortcuts to success abroad. “No pastor can give you anointing oil to secure documents. It’s only through hard work that you can survive and make progress.”

He also warned about unsafe financial practices. “Some people still send money to Ghana through individuals or roadside ‘abokyie’ operators, hoping to get better rates. But it’s risky. I always advise using safe platforms like Ife, Fi, or Tap Tap Send.”
