Tanko’s Story – Returning Home After Life Abroad
Tanko, a Ghanaian businessman, shared his experience of living abroad and why he eventually decided to return home.
Before traveling, he was doing well in Ghana selling China doors and tyres. He recalls, “Every morning, I would go to work, and my kids would cook for me. I felt free. Now that I’ve returned, I feel that same freedom again.”
Tanko once lived in Germany but decided to come back and continue his business. He explained that life abroad often looks glamorous in pictures, but the reality behind it is far from easy. “Yes, food may be cheaper and pictures look nice, but if you don’t have the right documents, life becomes very tough,” he said.
Despite family and friends discouraging him from returning, Tanko followed his heart. Now back in Ghana, he enjoys the simple joys of life—his children by his side and his mother praying for him every morning. “That alone makes me happy,” he added.
Still, he admits reintegration has not been easy. “The young ones who used to call me ‘Bossu’ have now opened their own shops. Sometimes when I walk around and people call me ‘Borga,’ I get upset because they don’t know what we really go through abroad,” he revealed.
Tanko now focuses on rebuilding his business gradually, dealing in doors and tyres. He believes Ghana is moving forward, and with persistence, he will grow his business again. “We’re doing it small-small, but the future is bright,” he said with optimism.
