Nana Hemaa Boatemaa, CEO of Bohyemaa Global and a Ghanaian Queen Mother in the UK, Shares Life Abroad Experience

In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show, Nana Hemaa Boatemaa—Queen Mother and CEO of Bohyemaa Global—shared her migration journey and life lessons abroad.

According to her, she moved from Ghana to Italy before finally settling in Northampton, UK. She explained that life overseas is not as glamorous as many people in Ghana imagine. “If you have the right documents and come abroad legally, things are different. But coming on a visit visa and overstaying will not help you. Jobs are scarce these days, so people should think carefully before making that decision,” she cautioned.

She recounted how she started working as a healthcare assistant and stressed the importance of financial discipline abroad. “Most people see Ghanaians spending lavishly when they visit home, but the truth is, over here we survive on loans and credit cards. Even registering Bohyemaa Global and opening an account required building a good credit score,” she revealed.

Nana Hemaa also spoke about the Bohyemaa group savings scheme (susu), which she has been running for two years with positive feedback. “We currently have over 80 members. Each contributes €500, but we plan to bring it down to as low as £100 to make it easier for more people. Beyond savings, the group also supports members in emergencies like accidents,” she explained.

Touching on relationships, she emphasized that money and miscommunication often lead to marital problems abroad. “Marriage requires maturity. Couples must learn to be transparent, communicate effectively, and make their partner their best friend. If you always run to family members with marital issues, they may never forgive your spouse even when you do,” she advised.

She concluded by urging Ghanaians planning to migrate to prepare well, value communication, and avoid unrealistic expectations about life abroad.
