Ghanaian living in Canada Robert recently appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami, where he opened up about his short-lived experience in Canada and why he decided to return home.

According to Robert, he traveled to Ontario, Canada, but lived in New Brunswick after hearing glowing stories about life abroad. He went with the hope of finding greener pastures, but reality was different.

> “I thought life in Canada would be better than in Ghana, but it was harder than I imagined. I slept for two and a half months without proper work. I was building a house in Ghana, and I realized that even earning $30 an hour abroad wouldn’t be enough compared to what I was already achieving here,” he explained.

Robert resigned from his job in Ghana before leaving and traveled on a student visa. He said he tried to return to Canada after coming back to Ghana, but it didn’t work out. Before traveling, he was working in the mining sector, earning between GH₵15,000 and GH₵18,000 a month with free meals.

In Canada, Robert worked in construction, laying blocks, and earning $50 an hour, but he found the work demanding and life expensive. He met people, including pensioners, who still had to work to survive.

> “Some people can live in Canada for 100 years without making real money. I saw a white man sleeping on the street in the rain. If we put the same effort we use abroad into business in Ghana, we wouldn’t go hungry. It’s easier to make $10,000 here than abroad,” he stressed.

Robert also shared stories of others who had sold properties to migrate. He met a Nigerian man who sold three of his five houses in Africa to fund his studies in Canada, only to struggle financially.

Despite his challenges, Robert is proud of what he has achieved in Ghana. Since returning, he has bought a car in less than four years and continues to support his family, including paying his younger brother’s school fees.

“The house I built in Ghana is the kind only rich white people have abroad. Sometimes we don’t realize what we already have until we leave,” he concluded.
