Naa Agyei, a Ghanaian welder who was based in Tema Community 1 Site 16 before traveling to Dubai and later Bahrain, has tragically passed away due to electrocution and heart Attack.

Gariba, popularly known as “Peace Man,” the Public Relations Officer for the Ghanaian community in Bahrain, confirmed the incident. Speaking on behalf of the community, he stated:

“I serve as the public relations officer here in Bahrain, so whenever something happens to a Ghanaian, I’m informed. I received a call from the general hospital that a Ghanaian man had died and his body was at the mortuary. I was authorized to go identify the deceased.”

According to Gariba, Naa Agyei was not listed among the known Ghanaian community members in Bahrain, which made initial identification difficult. However, after obtaining his boss’s contact, they were informed that he was not at work when the incident happened. His boss explained that Naa Agyei was electrocuted and rushed to the hospital by ambulance, but he was unaware that Naa Agyei had died until later.

The team proceeded to the police station to request a medical report. By the following day, they had secured all necessary documents, including the death certificate. Gariba shared the news in the Ghanaian community’s WhatsApp group, and members began to recognize him. One friend confirmed that Naa Agyei had visited their house just days earlier and was planning to travel on vacation.

Naa Agyei’s employer has accepted responsibility for the tragedy and has agreed to support efforts regarding the repatriation of the body. Since Ghana has no embassy in Bahrain, the necessary paperwork will be handled through Saudi Arabia, in line with the family’s wish to have the body returned to Ghana.

Although the official cause of death was reported as a heart attack, it remains unclear whether work stress contributed to it. Gariba noted that the Ghanaian population in Bahrain is about 3,000, adding:

“In Bahrain, as in the U.S., you must work to survive — otherwise, you risk deportation. While housemaids often face challenges, the men generally manage better. But once your visa expires, you have to apply for an extension.”
