Florence Asihene, a Ghanaian woman currently living in Parma, Italy, shared her migration story and life abroad in an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show.

She began by commenting on the intense heat during the Italian summer: “It’s really hot here in summer, and using air conditioning is quite expensive.”

Florence moved to Italy in 2007. Back in Ghana, she worked with the Electoral Commission and was the only daughter among her male siblings. Her mother was a trader, and Florence herself was based in Takoradi. “I used to travel to Togo to buy items like bags and wigs to sell,” she said.

Her journey to Italy was unexpected. “I never really planned to travel abroad. I always believed I could succeed in Ghana. I only got a passport to ease my trips to Togo. But one day, my elder brother, who was already in Italy, told me there was an opportunity to come. He arranged everything for me, and I made the move,” she explained.

Florence praised her brother for his support, saying, “He didn’t charge me a dime. I worked for him for about five months after I arrived. When someone helps you, there’s no need to be at odds with them—you have to appreciate the opportunity.”

Once in Italy, Florence took the initiative to integrate. “Even though my brothers were here, I decided to attend driving school. I also started learning the Italian language online.”

She ended on a lighthearted note, saying, “I believe I was destined to marry a white man,” hinting at how her life has transformed since relocating.
