Blessing, a Ghanaian woman, shared a heartbreaking story on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle GH show with DJ Nyaami. Her husband, who left Ghana for Russia in November last year, joined the Russian army and has since gone missing after being deployed to the battlefield on March 22.

According to Blessing, she hasn’t heard from him for weeks.

“I waited for two weeks after he went to the frontline, but there’s been no news. His group reportedly never returned, and they didn’t carry phones,” she said. “My first child accidentally flushed my phone, so I lost all contacts as well.”

She explained that her husband initially traveled to Russia with a GHC 50,000 loan, hoping to find work and settle the debt. Unfortunately, the job he found didn’t pay enough, and pressure mounted from creditors back in Ghana. He feared deportation because he didn’t have legal documents (“nkrataa”), and to avoid returning home with unpaid debts, he was influenced by friends to join the Russian army.

“He told me the army job wasn’t scary and even sent me some videos and voice notes to convince me,” Blessing said. “He had paid GHC 20,000 of the loan, with GHC 30,000 remaining. Before he went to the battlefield, GHC 750,000 was reportedly sent into his account, which was supposed to help him settle the debt. But he never got the chance to clear it or return.”

Now Blessing is left alone to care for their four children, the eldest being eight years old. She expressed deep concern, not just for her husband’s safety but also for the unpaid debts.

“I allowed him to go because I didn’t think it was that serious. He told me it was just to get documents and pay off the loan, then he’d return. If not for the debt, he wouldn’t have joined the Russian army.”

She added that his family members—his parents Kate and others living in Jumasi—are unaware of the job he took in Russia. “He said he signed up for one year and planned to tell them later,” she revealed.

Blessing is now struggling emotionally and financially

. “I can’t sleep at night. I’m suffering with the four children, and my biggest worry now is the loan he left behind.”
