Ghanaian Construction Worker and CEO of Swimming Pool Ghana, David, Shares His Journey on SVTV Africa

David, the CEO of Swimming Pool Ghana and a skilled construction worker, was recently featured as a guest on SVTV Africa. He shared his inspiring story of overcoming academic struggles and building a successful career in skilled trades.

David revealed that he failed and repeated school but realized early on that formal education wasn’t his path. Instead, he learned tiling and plumbing, starting in Koforidua before migrating to Accra for better opportunities. After three years of training under a master, he began working independently, securing contracts in Suame and Tema.

Despite becoming a father at 21, David was determined to provide a better life for his child. He eventually specialized in swimming pool construction after meeting an expert while working on a tomb project at the Koforidua cemetery. Today, he is recognized as an expert in swimming pools and runs multiple projects across Ghana.

David emphasized the value of skilled jobs, stating:

“If you have a skilled job with consistent work, you are better off than many with PhDs.” He encouraged the government to expand labor and apprenticeship programs, highlighting that many skilled workers enjoy stable incomes and opportunities both locally and internationally.

“My last apprentice earns 2,000 GHC monthly, and some skilled workers make as much as 8,000 GHC a month,” he noted. He also advocates for those earning below 2,000 GHC to consider learning a skilled trade, regardless of their current profession.

David also spoke about the health benefits of swimming, especially for stroke patients, people with high blood pressure, and blood clot risks. He specializes in rooftop swimming pools and advises beginners to start with water depths of 3 to 5 feet. Constructing an average swimming pool costs around 140,000 GHC and takes about 6 weeks to 2 months.

Looking ahead, David is working on a rooftop swimming pool project to demonstrate his success to former classmates who excelled academically but haven’t achieved his level of progress.

His company, Swimming Pool Ghana, also offers free training to youth interested in acquiring skilled jobs. David’s message to the youth is clear: “Learn a skilled trade — it can change your life.”
