TikTok Star Selina Shares Her Journey from Ghana to the UK and Life with Her Husband
Selina, a popular TikTok personality, is a Ghanaian living in the UK with her husband. In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide, she opened up about her life struggles and experiences.
Selina hails from Asante Bonwire and grew up with a hardworking mother who was a market woman. She faced many challenges growing up and eventually moved to Accra to live with a woman as a shop assistant. She worked for a while but had to quit because she wasn’t being paid.
She later applied to become a teacher, studied health management, and did her attachment at Ridge Hospital. Although she wasn’t officially paid, she received small tips from clients. After school, she was offered a job, but the low salary and high transportation costs made it unsustainable. She later worked at a maternity home in Tabora as a nurse, where she had a better experience.
Eventually, her husband brought her to the UK. Selina admitted that life abroad hasn’t been easy. Many people doubted her, saying she would leave her husband after relocating, but she stayed committed. She explained that she’s very selective about who she surrounds herself with, describing herself as “anti-social.” Her closest companion is her sister, who is like a twin to her.
Before meeting her husband, Selina had been single for two years and was already independent and working. Her husband showed her a different way of life, and despite others’ negative comments—especially when his friend’s girlfriend left after being brought to the UK—she remained loyal.
Selina said people insulted her husband for bringing a woman to the UK without having full legal documents. But she has now lived in the UK for seven years, and despite financial struggles and challenges, their marriage has survived. She believes not making too many friends helped protect their relationship.
At one point, she even wanted to return to Ghana due to how poorly she was treated by some Ghanaians in the UK. She avoided getting involved in community drama, which she believes saved her from unnecessary stress. Some people even forwarded her WhatsApp messages and social media comments to her husband, but she no longer lets that affect her.
She mentioned that even if her husband is unfaithful, she doesn’t let it stress her. They had to take on debt when she arrived in the UK, and her bonus was used to support the household. Life in the UK, she says, can be very boring.
Her father passed away in 2021, and she traveled back to Ghana for the funeral. She joked that she wishes she could’ve brought all the food from Ghana back to the UK.
Selina says she avoids disrespecting her husband and won’t tolerate anyone doing so either. She warned that older women can sometimes give poor advice in the UK—like one who once told her to deny her husband intimacy unless he changed his hairstyle. But Selina said she had no issue with how her husband looked.
Though many UK-based marriages have ended, Selina says hers has stood the test of time. “We’re not a perfect couple, but we hardly fight. We’re always together.”
