From Selling Phones in Accra to Farming Success in Sunyani – The Journey of Kelly Brown

Kelly Brown, a former mobile phone and accessories seller at Tiptoe Lane in Accra, has found a new path in agriculture. In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show, he shared how he transitioned from the bustling streets of Accra to a fulfilling life as a farmer in Sunyani.

“I used to sell phones in Accra, but most of the money went into rent and daily expenses,” Kelly revealed. “Last year, I moved to Sunyani and started focusing on farming. I also used to weed farms with my parents when I was younger. I grew up in Techiman, and farming has always been a part of my life.”

Beyond his love for farming, Kelly has also worked abroad. “Someone sponsored me to go to Dubai to buy phones and laptops. I stayed there for a year. When I returned, I began calculating my future, and I knew I wanted to focus on agriculture.”

Now, Kelly manages 4 acres of cassava, 32 acres of plantain, and also takes care of cattle for Ghanaians living abroad. “There’s money in cassava, maize, tomatoes, onions, and pepper. Even companies that deal in weedicides are showing interest in what we do,” he said.

He added, “All the teachers in this area are farming too. It’s common here. Land leasing is affordable—about GHC 300 for an acre over three months. My brother used to harvest up to 10 bags of pepper. We farm here and use the money to build houses in Accra.”

Kelly encourages the youth to embrace farming, saying it’s possible to combine agriculture with other trades. “Farming is not just a hustle, it’s a business—and it pays.”

In the same interview, he also spoke about his brother who is involved in tomato farming, further highlighting how agriculture is becoming a way of life and source of income for many in their community.
