Gizo Shares Dada KD’s Final Moments and Insights on SVTV Africa

Gizo, a Ghanaian based in the U.S. and a close friend of the late highlife legend Dada KD, recently appeared on SVTV Africa Daily Hustle Worldwide with DJ Nyaami. During the interview, he recounted Dada KD’s final days and shared thoughts on the Ghanaian music industry and life abroad.

According to Gizo, Dada KD performed in the U.S. last weekend and attended a funeral in Worcester, Massachusetts. Gizo, who is based in Ohio, revealed that although Dada KD appeared physically fine on stage, he confessed backstage that he wasn’t feeling well. “He hugged me and said he was not feeling too good,” Gizo recalled. A friend also mentioned that Dada KD planned to return to Ghana and couldn’t take pictures with fans after the show. Kofi Nii also performed at the event, and Dada KD was scheduled to close the program—but the energy just wasn’t there.

DJ Nyaami added that Dada KD once stated that physical appearance and muscle alone can’t sustain you; you need a side hustle. Gizo, who is also into farming, said that many Ghanaians want to live comfortably abroad without doing extra jobs like farming. “Sometimes, the farming makes me look old, but people don’t understand the hustle behind it,” he explained.

Gizo criticized the way many Ghanaians now celebrate artists like Dada KD after their passing, even though they were often neglected while alive. He recalled watching an interview in which Dada KD admitted he couldn’t return to Germany because he owed between 20,000 and 30,000 euros. “If you’re not very active in the industry, the income becomes small—like an old-timer,” Gizo said, noting that older musicians now rely heavily on streaming royalties.

Reflecting on the differences between Ghana and life abroad, Gizo shared his frustration: “When I came to Ghana, I spent GHC 2,000 on Vodafone data and it was finished within two days.” He had subscribed to an online platform to help someone learn coding, but she dismissed it, saying “AI is doing everything now.”

He criticized Ghana’s lack of collective progress, saying, “We have students at KNUST, but even a simple fufu-pounding machine has to be imported. We grow cocoa yet still import chocolate. Meanwhile, abroad we can buy chocolate for zero cents, but in Ghana, it’s a luxury.”

Gizo stressed that Dada KD was aware of the lack of unity in the music industry and emphasized that male musicians and hustlers need to prioritize their health. “A friend told me if KD had stayed in the U.S., with our health system, he could have gone for a proper check-up,” he said. Gizo suspects that Dada KD may have suffered from cardiac arrest due to stress and overthinking.

In closing, Gizo urged men to take their health seriously and not let the pressures of life and career steal their well-being.
