Ekovi Mensah: From Takoradi to Spain – A Ghanaian’s Journey of Determination and Growth

Ekovi Mensah, a Ghanaian national of Ewe and Fante heritage, is currently based in Mostoles, Spain. Originally from Takoradi, Ekovi lived with his mother and siblings in Ghana before relocating to Spain three years ago by air.

Back in Ghana, he attended secondary school in Cape Coast and later pursued a degree in Development Studies with a focus on Accounting. After completing his national service at Shongman Estate Atomic Hills Basic School, Ekovi’s career took a significant turn. During his service, he shared his struggles—such as sleeping in a single room infested with bedbugs—with the administrator responsible for their allowance. That woman later recommended him for an accounting job at a company in Airport Residential Area.

After successfully passing the interview, Ekovi was employed as an accountant. Due to his diligence and strong performance, he was promoted to Operational Manager in 2019 and later became the Head of Finance and Operations. His career growth eventually opened the door for international opportunities.

Ekovi had previously applied for scholarships in China, some of which didn’t materialize. However, when an opportunity to travel to Spain emerged, he pursued it with determination. Despite facing setbacks—such as a passport delay and accidentally changing his contact number—he was able to retrieve his documents and eventually secured a contract job in Ghana that enabled him to apply for a Spanish visa.

Upon arriving in Spain during the winter, Ekovi already had a work contract in place. He quickly secured his legal documentation and began work as a supervisor, despite his accounting background. He notes that life abroad is very different from the perceptions people in Ghana may have. “The hustle is real,” he says, “even some citizens and white people are homeless here.”

Ekovi emphasizes that success abroad requires hard work, determination, and the right mindset. Many immigrants who arrive expecting easy wealth without preparation end up disappointed. He learned Spanish while in Spain, although he couldn’t complete his studies due to work obligations.

He currently works with a major company in Spain and is proud of what he has achieved in just three years. He’s married and plans to bring his wife to join him soon, expressing confidence in their relationship despite the challenges of long-distance marriage.

Ekovi has rented a four-bedroom apartment to meet the requirements for family reunification. He shares that most Ghanaians and other Africans in his area are involved in farming, especially pig farming, in places like Barcelona Bridge.

Looking ahead, Ekovi plans to pursue a master’s degree, knowing that advanced education and fluency in the local language will open more professional opportunities. He has no plans of leaving Spain anytime soon. His advice to others: “Study hard, work hard, and save—savings are the foundation of a stable life abroad.”
